Porcelain. Textured Cardigan Knitting Pattern
Porcelain cardigan is published. The story of Frisenvang yarn is so inspiring that it took me awhile before I finally made up my mind what kind of garment I want to make with it. Its thread is “alive“, as it is often a case with handspun skeins; it has its own texture and character - not perfectly even and not perfectly dyed. I loved working with the skeins like that - each stitch is slightly different from the previous one in a good way. I felt that a yarn like this has to be shaped into a simple wearable piece with a slight texture contrast, just enough to make things interesting both for knitters’ hands and eyes, but something that won’t take the main focus from the yarn.
Inspired by 90s fashion, I feel like this cardigan could be easily worn by Rachel in first season of Friends. So simple to throw on with the jeans or a simple dress, or reach for it on a chilly morning to pair with your pajama while drinking a hot cup of coffee (tea for me, please).
Porcelain is a top-down seamless cardigan with the yoke shaped as a compound raglan,
which creates a natural line that runs from the neck to the base of the armhole. Yoke instructions are written step-by-step for each size individually.
The neckband is knit simultaneously with the main body of the cardigan, following the V-neck line. The i-cord edge is framing the front of the sweater, it creates a neater look and doesn’t allow the edges to curl.
The sleeves have the minimal shaping to create volume effect. All the decreases are shifted closer to the cuff to achieve the gathered look.
I chose large contrasting buttons for the retro look. You can play with this detail and let your creativity flow here - you can really change the look of the whole cardigan by just adjusting the button size or the color. Have fun with it!
I made my sample slightly cropped. Though usually I love longer cozy sweaters, I felt like this cardi calls for a shorter length.
You are free to experiment, of course - in the pattern instructions, I indicated where you can make the length adjustments.
I love the combination of basic stitches in this piece - St st, 1x1 ribbing, seed st. So simple, but makes the whole knitting process much more fun.
