DIY Rules for a WTF World
"DIY Rules for a WTF World. How To Speak Up, Get Creative, and Change The World" is the book by Krista Suh, a feminist and creator of Pussyhat project movement. A couple of months ago I received the copy for a review and being a huge fan of self-growth and self development books, I immediately dived into it.The book consists of small chapters that are not necessarily to be read in order - it is basically a collection of ideas and ways how to implement them into your life. Two my favorite chapters that I personally highlighted for myself is "You can skin a Deer"and "Fear and Want".
"Anyone can skin a deer. It just matters how long you take.... You can do anything. Some of the things that you can do might be done awkwardly and ungracefully and messily at first, but you can still do them"
How I wish I learned this 10 years ago and not a couple of years ago, I would spare myself lots of criticism and self-doubt... As Krista says women (I personally think it is not just women, but all of us) feel this pressure since the very early age to be the best - whether it is sports or school or good manners. And I can so relate to it - there is little space given for messing things up and for making YOUR mistakes. This constant reach for perfection can bite you hard, when you realize that perfect doesn't always equal happy."Fear and Want". The author suggests drawing two overlapping circles - one is Fear and one is Want. And to list the things in each circle - whatever ends up in the overlapping part, is worth trying.
"Going after what we love leads us to great things, and oftentimes, facing our fears also leads us to great things"
A simple truth that I personally often forget. But if to look back, it does feel like all the best things that happened in my life were something that I was passionate about, but also had the fear of diving into them.Almost every chapter in "DIY Rules for a WTF World" has a DIY activity/exercise that can help you implement the ideas expressed in the chapter into your life. It is a great way to use your creativity to lift your spirits. I absolutely loved the design and for formatting of the book - hand-drawn illustrations in every chapter and highlighted exercise text boxes make it really easy to navigate through the book. At the end of the book you will also find the patterns for Pussyhat and Evil Eye Gloveknit. To sum things up, I would love to share with you my opinions. Is "DIY Rules for a WTF World" the best self-growth book I have read? No, I definitely have books on my coffee table that appeal to me more and go deeper into the subject, but if I wanted some quick encouragement and reminder that things are much brighter than they seem right now, I would pick it up.If you don't like to mix your creativity with politics, then this book is not for you. The author is clearly expressing her political views throughout the book.
I hope this review was helpful!! Have a wonderful day today!
P.S. Yes, I did sacrifice a whole bag of marshmallows for this photo story :)
